Just One Thing

“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble, it’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” – Mark Twain

There is a memorable scene in the 1991 comedy, City Slickers, where Jack Palance turns to Billy Crystal and says (in that wonderful raspy voice) that the secret to life is “just 1 thing.” He goes on and says that exactly what the 1 thing, “is what you’ve got to figure out.” Focus on the proper “1 thing” and you prosper. Focus on everything else (all the things that don’t matter), and you don’t prosper.

Our frenzied financial world provides many “things” that can distract our attention away from what we want to accomplish in the long term. Perhaps for many, the”1 thing” is as simple as “where do you want to go?” The answer will provide hints about solutions and initial actions needed to make this a reality. If we focus on our destination, all the unimportant daily “things” won’t deter us.

When I first started working in the investment field 30+ years ago, there were fewer than 1,000 mutual funds. Today, there are 20 times more funds all seeking, in different ways, to solve the “1 thing.” What is your “1 thing“? Ready for a real conversation?
